What is Spinal Decompression Therapy?

Spinal decompression is a non-invasive therapy that uses motorized traction to gently stretch the spine with the goal of relieving back pain and/or leg pain. This gentle, intermittent stretching changes the force and position of the spine which takes the pressure off the spinal discs, the gel-like cushions between the bones in your spine. This change can make bulging or herniate disks retract, which takes pressure off of nerves and other structures in your spine. This in turn helps promote movement of water, oxygen and nutrient-filled fluids into the discs so they can heal.

Spinal decompression therapy can be used to treat bulging or herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, worn spinal joints, injured or diseased spinal nerve roots, back or neck pain or sciatica.

During spinal decompression therapy, you will be fit with a harness around your pelvis and another around your trunk. You either lie face down or face up on a computer-controlled table. A doctor operates the computer, customizing treatment to your specific needs. Each Spinal Decompression treatment session may last 30-45 minutes. Depending on your unique condition, you may be required to have a series of chiropractic sessions over a span of several weeks.
